On behalf of Native Scientist (https://www.nativescientist.com/), Soraia Silva (ESR 9) was part of an outreach activity last 25th of March at Walthamstow School for Girls, London. A group of five scientists from different fields planned a “speed dating a scientist” session with various games and experiments depending on the researcher’s background. Soraia pointed out the importance of bones and the human skeleton, the concept of cell and how do we make new bone to the 5-10 year old children attending the workshop. After a brief Q&A, the students got the opportunity to play around, put lab coats, gloves and goggles on, and try to make their own cell culture grow in T25 flasks. This activity was not only to promote science, but also the Portuguese language. The students were bilingual and this was an opportunity for them to be exposed to scientific vocabulary in their other mother tongue.
