The aim of my project is to investigate the interactions of growth factors with proteins of the extracellular matrix and their relevance in osteoarthritis. Therefore, specific proteins of the extracellular matrix with a role in osteoarthritis will be identified and their binding capacity to selected growth factors verified. Afterwards, the effect of these complexes on chondrogenesis and cell fate will be analysed in vitro. Relevant complexes with promising effects on cartilage repair will then be coupled to scaffolds and further characterised. This study will provide a better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying cartilage degeneration and might help to develop improved treatment strategies for osteoarthritis.
